چکیده

Electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus of the vole, Microtus agrestis, usually results in ovulation, whereas stimulation of areas in the posterior hypothalamus do not. Ovulation can also be elicited by injections of sheep median-eminence extracts, and by preparations ofsheep luteinizing hormone. Observations on the number of corpora lutea formed, and ripe Graafian follicles remaining after treatment, suggest that mating is the most potent stimulus for ovulation, followed by electrical stimulation and hormone injection.

The effect of mating upon LH release in male and female voles of the species Microtus agrestis.

Members of the microtine species are probably reflex ovulators. The prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster (Richmond & Conway, 1969), the meadow vole, M. pennsylvanicus (Clulow & Mallory, 1970), the levant vole, M. guentheri (Bodenheimer & Sulman, 1946), the Californian vole, M. californicus (Greenwald, 1956), and the montane vole, Microtus montanus (Gray, Davis, Zerylnick & Dewsbury, 1974) have al...

Further observations on the influence of the social environment on ovulation in the vole, Microtus agrestis.

Although members of the species Microtus agrestis are induced ovulators (Austin, 1957; Breed, 1967), ovulation may be induced by stimuli other than those associated with mating, e.g. when females are separated from adult males by wire mesh (Milligan, 1974). Tactile contact between the sexes is not necessary for this ovulatory response as ovulation still occurred when two barriers of mesh, 2\m=....

Endemic Hantavirus in Field Voles, Northern England

We report a PCR survey of hantavirus infection in an extensive field vole (Microtus agrestis) population present in the Kielder Forest, northern England. A Tatenale virus-like lineage was frequently detected (≈17% prevalence) in liver tissue. Lineages genetically similar to Tatenale virus are likely to be endemic in northern England.

Photoperiodic control of testis activity in the vole, Microtus agrestis.

Under natural conditions the vole (Microtus agrestis) breeds in the spring and summer but not in the autumn and winter. This seasonal change was attributed by Baker & Ranson (1933) to the influence of hours of sunshine, and in the laboratory it has been shown that photoperiod affects the growth ofgonads and maintenance of their activity (Baker & Ranson, 1932; Clarke & Kennedy, 1967; Breed & Cla...

Species-specific limitation of vole population growth by least weasel predation: facilitation of coexistence?

Interspecific competition is usually understood as different species competing directly with each other for limited resources. However, predators can alter such competitive interactions substantially. Predation can promote the coexistence of species in a situation where it would otherwise be impossible, for example if a tradeoff between the competitive abilities and predation resistance of the ...
